Chapter 6 - Let’s make a deal

Cain

The college athletic field

2:00, Sunday morning

Cain stood aghast and took in the situation with mute horror. When he had allowed Sindy to approach Ben, he had thought it would be alone, and he didn’t think it would be tonight. He’d given Ben ample warning and he had been fairly certain that the boy could adequately defend himself.

When Sindy did decide to approach Ben, Cain had fully expected him to chase her off. This was the last thing that he had anticipated. Cain had even been sure that he’d felt her leave. He’d had no idea she was here. He hadn’t felt the presence of any others, and this was definitely not what he’d had in mind.

Felicity turned to face him accusingly. He realized things looked very bad for him right now, from her point of view. She must think that he had deceived her. How could he have been so stupid? He was the oldest among them and he had been a naive fool.

“Arif!” He yelled into the mist, as he realized the only explanation for the deception. There was a moment of silence and then Arif did appear. He moved closer out of the fog from behind and to the side of Sindy and her men. Cain was furious. “Arif, do you so easily break your word?”

Arif spread his hands. “I have not raised a hand against you and yours, such was the extent of my oath. I merely have lent my psychic abilities towards the pursuit of my ward’s endeavor. A pursuit which you so generously granted her yourself. I leave you to your own dealings now. This does not concern me. I think that Sindy can take care of herself on this occasion.”

Sindy stepped forward again as Arif let himself fade back into the fog and was gone. Cain felt the other vampires’ trace lights seem to wink into existence in his mind as Arif left. Sindy addressed him in contempt. “Did you really think you were going to give me permission to try for him and I wouldn’t get him in the end?” She was quick to pick up on Felicity’s confused expression. “That’s right. Cain gave Ben to me. A little present. I guess he cares for me a little more than he lets on.”

Cain practically growled at her. “You know full well, it wasn’t like that at all.”

“You shouldn’t make promises that you aren’t prepared to keep, especially when you’re playing with other people’s lives. Maybe if you weren’t so wrapped up in your own martyrdom, you could focus on other people’s problems for a change.”

“That advice doesn’t carry much weight, coming from you.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot. You like to be the one to give advice, be the teacher. What were you gonna teach me Cain? Self-control? I’d say you’re a little lacking in that area yourself lately, hmmm? Maybe Felicity could answer that for us. I can’t believe you even got her to come near you
